An unusual shaped pair of Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) bronze and shakudo vases with gold, silver, bronze, copper, shakudo and shibuichi decoration of songbirds among fruiting pomegranate branches.
These vases are very classic examples of Suzuki Chochiki’s style, the bold unusual shapes and playful, lifelike birds paired with vibrant red and black multimetal patination are unmistakable.

Pomegranates
The pomegranate is not native to Japan but is widely grown there, a popular fruit it represents fertility and eternal life.
Shakudo is an alloy of gold and copper which can be treated to develop a black patina.
Shibuichi is an alloy of silver and copper which can be treated to develop a grey patina.
Suzuki Chochiki (Kako)
Suzuki Chochiki, artist name Kako, (1848-1919) was one of the most renowned bronze artists of the Meiji Period. After starting out as an independent artist he became director of the metalworking division of Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha company in 1874. He applied his distinctive style to many forms of metalwork but it best know for his monumental, detailed bronzes created specially for the great expositions in Vienna, Philadelphia and Paris.
The peacock koro from the Paris exposition was brought by the V&A and now forms a spectacular centre piece to their Japan Gallery.
