From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era (1868 – 1912) Okimono, this characterful black-patinated Bronze Okimono of Daruma. Unusual among Japanese depictions of the Zen master, this is a serious composition rather than the usual humorous take on Daruma. He is seated with a stern expression on his face. A “hossu” (fly swatter) rests on his lap, an embalm of Zen Buddhism. The figure, with a rich, black patination has gold ring eyes and gold hoop ear-rings.
Offered in excellent condition. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information.
Daruma
Daruma or Bodhidharma was an Indian monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century, he is credited with bringing Buddhism to China. His teachings centred around meditation as do many of the legends. One details how he fell asleep seven years into his nine years of wall gazing, he became so angry with himself that he cut off his eyelids so he might never sleep again. Where his eyelids hit the floor the first tea plants grew providing stimulants to help keep his students awake.
Hossu
A hossu is on first inspection a simple fly shooer, formed from a skein of horse or cow hair attached to a short stick, but it is an object of great symbolism to the Zen Buddhist faith. As well as being used to gently shoo flies without killing them is is also said to protect the wielder from desire. The hossu represents a Zen teachers authority and is often passed down from one teacher to the next.
