A fine Japanese Meiji Period (1868-1912) Silver and multi-metal writing or jewellery box with decoration of the Seven Lucky Gods.
They are moulded in three dimensions in Silver, Gold and Bronze on a Shibuichi plaque and sit on the ground amongst woven baskets. Hotei is leaning on his sack as Benten entertains them all with her prodigious skill on the biwa. Their various symbols and accoutrements can be seen around them portrayed in fine detail.
The box is lined with a dark wood, possibly ebony and has two sections meaning it is probably a writing or jewellery box.
Seven Lucky Gods
In Japan, the Seven Lucky Gods or Seven Gods of Fortune grant good luck and are often represented as a group or on their own in Japanese art.
There are seven gods but sometimes only six will be depicted as Jurojin and Fukurokuju share the same origin.
