This endearing multimetal box dates from late 19th Century Japan and is offered as part of our collection of fine Meiji-era works of art.
The box with onlaid multi-metal and enamel decoration of two roosters, a chicken and their hatchlings on an iron ground. The signed silver interior, with a picturesque scene depicting trees in blossom and a decorative screen.

Chicken
Celebrated and much revered in Japan the noble chicken is a symbol of many things including love, luck, prosperity and courage. It’s crow was said to banish the darkness when it awoke the sun goddess Amaterasu, it is an auspicious symbol in the Shinto religion and reverence for the chicken dates back to the earliest tomb paintings in Japan.
Cherry Blossom
Cherry blossom is a well known symbol of Japan, it is beautiful but fleeting, it represents spring, a time of renewal and reminds us of the fleeting nature of life.
