An elegant 19th century Japanese satsuma vase signed by the renowned Ryozan. The vase with two large panels, one of a lone hawk sitting in bamboo the other of a bustling scene of pilgrims making their way from a boathouse up Mount Fuji. They wear their finest dress and many carry umbrellas as they admire cherry blossom on the way up.
These two main panels are on a ground with geometric floral shapes mimicking kimono patterns, the top and base feature similar with stylised rain dragons. The moulding on the edge of the top and bottom of the vase cleverly mimics the bamboo seen in the hawk panel.
Signed Ryozan, Yasuda and with the Shimazu crest.
Mount Fuji
Fuji is a stratovolcanic mountain, it is 3775 metres tall and the 35th tallest mountain in the world. It is praised for it’s attractive symmetry which has made it the subject of many poems and works of art. It is an important symbol of Japan and has huge significance in the Shinto religion, there are many shrines at the base and on the ascent of Fuji, they honour Princess Konohanasakuya the Kami (Deity) whose symbol is cherry blossom.
Cherry Blossom
Cherry blossom is a well known symbol of Japan, it is beautiful but fleeting, it represents spring, a time of renewal and reminds us of the fleeting nature of life.
Hawk
The hawk is traditionally a symbol of nobility and wealth, due to the expense of training and caring for the birds.
Bamboo
Bamboo is a symbol of purity and innocence, due to it’s extensive root structure it is also revered for it’s strength and for years if there was and earthquake people were told to run into a bamboo grove as it’s roots would hold the earth together.
Yinglong
A Yinglong is a Chinese mythical dragon-like creature closely related to the Jiaolong and Panlong, they all are said to be winged forms of hornless dragon closely associated with the sea or rivers. Over time it’s origins have become lost and confused, but winged dragons with dominion of water often appear in Chinese and Japanese myths. They were often tattooed as emblems of protection. The Yinglong type dragon may have a basis in a real life animal the word Jiaolong can sometimes be used to refer to a crocodile and there are records of ancient and fairly recent street peddlers selling the fossilised teeth of Iguanadons as Jiaolong teeth.
