Simply put, POA stands for “Price on Application”.
With some of our pieces, we prefer not to openly publish our asking price. We absolutely welcome visitors to the website to contact us to enquire about the cost of such pieces.
We just prefer to have a conversation to allow us to explain the pricing as well as to talk in more detail about the piece in question.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a super expensive piece but it may just be that there is something unique or special that we would like to be able to tell you about in more detail.

A multi-patinated bronze figure of a Tsuba maker. This unusual figure of a craftsman is depicted in a seated position using a tree stump as a workbench. He is adding the decoration into the Tsuba with a small chisel and hammer. Two other finished works can be seen at his feet.
On his Kimono an imperial Chrysanthemum Mon can be seen, perhaps suggesting he works for the Imperial household.
A rarer Miyao model, and not one we have seen before.
On a classic wood Miyao base. Condition is very good as shown in the photographs. Contact us for further information or to arrange a viewing.
Tsuba Maker
The process of making a Tsuba is long and highly skilled, especially when making a functional object for battle. The craftsman we have here is seen at the end of the process, he is using a technique called Chokin, which refers to a number of decorative metal chasing skills. Here he is carving a design into the metal with a small sharp chisel. This finishing technique is seen in a lot of Japanese metalwork and gives it a finer more individual artistic flair than just casting.
Tsuba
Tsuba are the guard element of the Japanese sword hilt. They are almost always of circular disk form and are often decorated with carved and pierced motifs as well as inlaid and patinated metals. They are seen as functional parts of the sword as well as works of art in their own right.
Practical examples tend to be made of iron or bronze, but examples made for ritual or show can be made of fragile inlaid gold lacquer or Cloisonne enamel works.
Miyao Eisuke
Possibly one of the best known and widely celebrated metalwork manufacturers of the Meiji period, the Miyao company was first based in Yokohama before moving to Tokyo in 1890.
They exhibited at many of the Great Expositions to great critical acclaim and won many prizes for their impressive works, they are best known for their metal ware but they also manufactured Shibayama style works and ivory figures.
