Simply put, POA stands for “Price on Application”.
With some of our pieces, we prefer not to openly publish our asking price. We absolutely welcome visitors to the website to contact us to enquire about the cost of such pieces.
We just prefer to have a conversation to allow us to explain the pricing as well as to talk in more detail about the piece in question.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a super expensive piece but it may just be that there is something unique or special that we would like to be able to tell you about in more detail.

From our collection of Japanese lacquerware of the late 19th Century, this beautiful Yusurutsuki no dai table. Not made for export, this was produced by the finest Japanese craftspeople to be used for ceremonial purposes in Japan. These stands were originally made to hold sacred rice cooking water during the ascension ceremony of the Emperor. Later they were adapted for other ceremonies. This example is decorated with fine detailed leaves and Mon depicting rice flowers.
Yusurutsuki no dai
The origins of this particular type of small formal table can be traced to the yusurutsuki no dai 泔杯台, a stand for a bowl of rice-cooking water used during the imperial succession ceremony.
In later times such highly prestigious forms were adapted for other uses, a process explored in a small thematic show at Kyoto National Museum (19 December 2017–28 January 2018) that included a similar stand, from the Museum collection, used at the genpuku coming-of-age ceremony. An earlier example of a yusurutsuki no dai is in the collection of the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Ore., USA, inventory number L.2012.56.
