Over-painted with red and gold decoration this highly collectable pair of 18th Century cannisters and covers date from the reign of Emperor Kang Hsi. They would have been originally made for export to the West and “clobbered” in Europe. Each square form panel depicts ladies in pavilions among flowers and fruit trees.

Clobbered
The term “clobbered” or “clobber ware” refers to Chinese export porcelain that has had its original blue and white under glaze added to at a later date usually with coloured enamel decoration. The practice originated in Holland and spread through Europe. It was often used to enhance Chinese ceramics to make them appeal to European tastes it could also be used to disguise damage or repairs.
