From our collection of fine Meiji-era Metalwork, this imposing Parcel gilt Bronze Okimono by Miyao and depicting a Samurai Archer.
The warrior stands proud and defiant with a stern expression on his face and holding his bow in his left hand and a cluster of four arrows in his right hand. He carries a Tanto and Wakizashi and his robes are embellished with decoration of mythical Phoenix birds. As he is a hunter, he stands bare-foot in order to tread quietly and not alert his prey to his presence. At his hip, he carries a ringed Tsurumaki. (A round wisteria vine that spare bow strings are wound around.)
The wood stand, typical of Miyao Eisuke with elaborate Karakusa scrolls in Gold lacquer.

Miyao Eisuke
Possibly one of the best known and widely celebrated metalwork manufacturers of the Meiji period, the Miyao company was first based in Yokohama before moving to Tokyo in 1890.
They exhibited at many of the Great Expositions to great critical acclaim and won many prizes for their impressive works, they are best known for their metal ware but they also manufactured Shibayama style works and ivory figures.
