Confucius (551BC-479BC)
Born Kong Qiu, Confucius was a Chinese philosopher and politician active in the Spring and Autumn Period in China (771BC-476BC).
He is the father of the Confucian school of thought which is seen by some a religion and others a code of ethics has been widely followed throughout history and it’s principles are still observed by some today.
The basis of Confucian belief is that human beings are fundamentally good, teachable, improvable and perfectible through virtue, personal and communal endevour. Many teachings and principles have been based on Confucius over time, including ‘The Golden Rule’ – Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself. As with all belief systems Confucianism is not with controversy, many modern scholars regard it as a patriarchal ideology which was historically damaging for Chinese women and still influences treatment of them today.
