Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) metalware, this Iron Tetsubin of classical form and with Gold and Silver inlaid decoration of Red Crowned Cranes in a misty field.
The lid of the vessel made from Bronze, with a Jade handle and signed Ryubundo also with inlaid Silver depictions of Paulownia.
It is most likely the original lid. Tetsubin covers were often made of Bronze and by different artists who made the Iron bodies of the pots.
Tetsubin
Tetsubin are Japanese cast iron kettles used to boil and pour water for tea. They are traditionally heated over charcoal, and many are elaborately decorated with inlaid metals or relief designs.
It’s uncertain when the current form of the tetsubin was developed, but it’s believed it was at some point in the 1500’s.
It’s said by many tea aficionados that the water boiled in an iron tetsubin gives a superior flavour to the tea. When looking inside older examples you can see the mineral deposit build ups from many uses, these are all believed to add to the flavour of the water.

In Japan the the red crowned crane is a much revered bird and is a symbol of strength, good fortune and longevity. The Crane was thought to live for 1,000 years. In captivity red crowned cranes have been known to live for 75 years making it one of the longest lived birds. The red crowned crane is currently endangered due to loss if it’s wetland habitat with less than 2,000 in the wild, about 950 of these being in Japan.
