From our collection of Oriental Art, an unusual and characterful Japanese ceramic Okimono depicting a pair of Quail perched upon a bamboo root. They appear to be startled by a large ladybird which has landed on the far end of the felled plant.
Such is the skill of the potters, that the birds almost appear like they could have been carved from wood. Provenance: From the collection of Dr Christopher and Mrs Helen Girton.
Offered in fine condition. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information, more images or to arrange a viewing.

Quail
In Japan, Quail are known to symbolise good luck, courage and the arrival of Autumn.
Ancient Samurai warriors thought that the call of the Quail sounded like “Gokicho” which translates to “Good Luck”. Warriors would listen for this call before heading into battle. Historically, Quail were kept and bred for fighting across parts of East-Asia and as such, they also came to represent fighting spirit, bravery and ultimately, victory. Quail were also frequently depicted in Haiku and classical paintings, hiding among long, fading Autumn grasses under the moonlight. For this reason, Quail is a recognised Kigo (Seasonal word), used to associate with a certain time of year.
