From our collection of antique Japanese Cloisonné, this impressive (at over 70cm in height) pair of enamel vases dating from the end of the 19th Century and depicting a pair of Hawks among Acer trees.
On one vase a Hawk is perched on the tree while on the other, its mate is taking flight. The grey and red of the Acer creates a striking contrast with the deep teal ground on the body of the vases.
Offered in good condition as shown in the photographs. Please feel free to contact us for further information, images or to arrange a viewing.

Hawk
The Hawk is traditionally a symbol of nobility and wealth in Japan. This is mostly due to the expense of training and caring for the birds.
Acer
Acer or “Japanese Maple” is a symbol of strength and endurance. It is often used in the art of Bonsai and it is traditional to go to view the changing colours of the leaves in Autumn, much like the cherry blossom is viewed in the spring.
Cloisonné
Cloisonné is an enameling technique used to decorate metal objects, typically copper or silver, fine lines of metal are used to define the outlines of a design (called “Cloisons” in French which is where the name Cloisonné comes from) enamel paste in different colours is applied to the areas, which are then fired in a kiln and polished to create a glass-like finish.
Cloisonné is very fragile and must be treated with the utmost care, as one tiny knock can cause an area to shatter, it is very hard if not impossible to restore Cloisonné.
