This attractive European style silk embroidery dates from Meiji-era Japan (1868 – 1912) and depicts a pair of Lions stalking their prey. The female is on haunches and just ahead of her mate. Silk embroideries like this were often inspired by European paintings and prints brought over to Japan.

European influences on Japanese Silk Embroideries
Japan has a long history working with silk, as can be seen in wall hangings used to decorate the home and elaborate kimono worn by high ranking nobles. During the Meiji period this skill was used to create artworks to appeal the the European taste, paintings and prints by popular European artists of the day were often used as inspiration, and copies were painstakingly hand embroidered with silk in workshops. Lions are a popular subject and many Japanese silks are based on the works of Edward Landseer the artist who designed the enormous bronze lions in Trafalgar Square.
