Choju-jinbutsu-giga
The Choju-giga (meaning animal caricatures) are a famous and much loved set of four 12/13th century scrolls depicting animals and some humans frolicking. The most famous and widely reproduced subjects and the frogs, monkeys and hares, they are seen playing, fighting and taking part in various ceremonies. They are a National treasure of Japan and of huge artistic importance as they are the earliest examples of the linier monochrome drawing style that the country is so famous for. It is believed that due to difference in style the scrolls were created by multiple artists, they belong to the Kozan-Ji temple in Kyoto but have be entrusted to the Kyoto and Tokyo museums for conservation and display.
