We just prefer to have a conversation to allow us to explain the pricing as well as to talk in more detail about the piece in question.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a super expensive piece but it may just be that there is something unique or special that we would like to be able to tell you about in more detail.

From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) Okimono, this fine and serene depiction of a bearded Samurai fisherman. He stands carefully unhooking a small fish from his fishing line. His rod in the crook of his arm and sword at his hip. He is well dressed with elegant robes opulently decorated with paulownia flowers and foliage.
He stands on a classical wood Miyao stand with elaborately inlaid gilt phoenix

Paulownia Plant
The paulownia plant is an important symbol in Japan. Also known as the ‘Empress tree’, it would be planted when a baby girl was born to a wealthy family. Traditionally a paulownia wood kimono dresser would be given to a bride on her wedding day. The flower is also the symbol of the Prime Ministers office and appears on the 500 yen coin.
Fishing in Japan
Due to it’s volcanic, mountainous terrain and frequent typhoons, historically it was very difficult to raise cattle and other large farm animals in Japan. This, and the prevalence of coastline, naturally lead to a seafood being the primary source of protein in Japan. Chickens and pigs were kept for food but in around 600AD Emperor Temmu prohibited the consumption of pork, chicken, horse or ox. This lasted until the middle of the 16th century
