Falconry in Japan (Takagari)
Falconry has a long history in Japan beginning in the 4th century, originally coming from China via Korea. Due to the time, effort and cost of keeping birds it has always been a pursuit dominated by nobles or wealthy individuals. Goshawks and Eagles being popular and high status birds to won, falconry was used to entertain but also to settle disputes between lords.
Torii Gate
In Japan Torii gates mark the boundaries between the mundane and the sacred. There are countless numbers of them in many different sizes found throughout Japan. Traditionally they are made of stone or wood with red lacquer but nowadays many different materials are used. Perhaps the most recognisable is the floating gate at Itsukushima Shrine, impossibly beautiful, it is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and a National Treasure of Japan.
