From our collection of Chinese and Japanese Fine Art and Antiques, this pair of Japanese bronze vases with dynamic decoration of swooping geese and a long-tailed Minogame turtle.
The decoration is highlighted with clever use of gold and silver patination. The goose, followed by two of its young swoops over a rolling hillside while the Minogame sits serenely on a rock under a golden moon while a young silver shelled turtle looks up at it. The theme of the decoration on this pair, while not obvious on first inspection linked, seems to revolve around family, children and long life.

Geese
The geese depicted here are likely to be white fronted geese, a species which due to conservation efforts in the 80’s is now once again common in Japan. Goose meat has long been regarded as a luxury for the imperial classes and aristocracy, the white fronted goose is a popular motif on family crests and paintings and frequently appears in Japanese folklore and poems.
Minogame
The Minogame is a mythical Japanese turtle, it’s believed to live up to 10,000 years, and is often seen in the company of the god Jurojin. The ‘tail’ is actually long strands of algae which have formed due to the turtle’s great age
