From our collection of fine Japanese metalware from the late 19th Century, this fine miniature Bronze and multi-metal of a Kodansu.
The cabinet is of rounded oval form, decorated using the Iro-e-zogan technique, in Gold, Silver, Shibuichi and Shakudo. The domed copper top with an ornamental handle formed as two facing Dragon heads set upon a collar encircled by another Dragon with gilt flames around it’s trailing body on a copper tinted ground. The oval two door body with a floral cluster for open and closing. The interior is finely decorated with a mountainside river scene of a procession on a long bridge. A boatman travels beneath and Cranes fly over head. The reverse showing a river scene with sail boats against a mountainous background over which hangs a flowering tree. The interior with eight asymmetrical drawers. Each one decorated along the doors with matching floral draw handles. The base with a rounded border carved with waves supported by four feet decorated with breaking wave patterns.
On separate, original fine ebony wood base, finely carved in high relief around the sides with two facing dragons encircling the four legs of the stand.
Signed Miyabe Atsuyoshi to the underside and offered in fine condition. The total height of this piece on its stand is 31cm. The height of the Kodansu on its own is 17.5cm. It is 12cm wide without its stand and 9.5cm deep.
