From our collection of fine, antique Japanese metalware, this large (62cm in height) Bronze Okimono of Gama Sennin. Made in the style of the Miyao Company of Yokohoma, this figure stands in the blowing wind, a root-wood staff in one hand and with his other hand, he holds aloft a Toad. The amphibian seems unbothered by this with one leg, nonchalantly hanging down. Two further Toads climb up his legs and there are more on his chest, all seemingly keen to take their turn. His robes decorated with stylised Phoenix Mon and with a double Gourd drinking vessel at his waist.
The figure stands on a simple carved-wood base.
Offered in fine condition as shown in the photographs. Please contact us for further images, video, information or to arrange a viewing.

Toad
Toads appear in many popular Japanese folk tales such as Jiraiya, a ninja who used shape-shifting magic to transform into a giant toad.
They are also a symbol of Gama Sennin which translates as ‘Toad Immortal’ is almost always seen with at least one toad. He is based on the 10th century Chinese alchemist, Liu Hai, who learned the secrets of immortality from a great three legged toad. Gama Sennin is a master of healing and herbs and has the ability to transform into a toad as well as fly, and release his spirit from his body.
