An excellent and unusual pair of jars and covers decorated in a subtle Famille Verte / Canton style, with moulded lion dog decoration and finial. These vases are in very good condition with some minor ware (as expected for their age) and frits to the rim.
Lion Dog (Chinese)
Lion dogs, also known as Shishi, Foo Dogs or Guardian lions feature heavily in Chinese mythology and symbolism. They are thought to represent companionship, success, good fortune and protection. They are actually lion-like creatures as opposed to being actual dogs.
Famille Verte
Famille Verte is a style of Chinese porcelain decoration that uses a palette of greens.
Canton
Canton or Cantonese is a style of porcelain decoration produced in Guangzhou, Guangdong in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Prior to 1842 Guangdong was the only port that could legally export to Europe. It is typically decorated with panels of figures, birds and insects on complicated grounds usually in pallets of green and pink.
