From our collection of Japanese, late 19th Century, Meiji-era metalwork, this charming Silvered Bronze Okimono which at first glance appears to just be of a little horned Owl sitting peacefully on a realistic Bronze tree branch. On closer inspection though, a monkey be seen in the hollow of the stump looking towards the owl in terror.
This transforms the Owl from what would normally be small, to a giant.
The Owl is silvered Bronze with Gold legs and Gold and Shakudo detailing in the eyes. The tree and Monkey are both Bronze and the Monkey has gold ringed eyes which serves to enhance the shocked expression on his face.
Offered in fine condition as shown in the photographs. Please feel free to contact us for more images, video or to arrange a viewing in person.
Monkey
In Japan, the Monkey is seen as a protector of horses and mediator between humans and the Gods. It has the power to dispel evil spirits and bring good fortune. Due to their playful nature, they are also depicted as creatures of humour.
Owl
The Owl is a symbol of good fortune and luck in Japan. Due to the Japanese word for owl (Fukuro) being similar to the one for luck, it is often used as a suffix for boys names. Owl charms are popular gifts in Japan and are often given to students when they graduate.
