A Japanese Meiji Period (1868-1912) iron tsuba with multimetal decoration of cows under an acer tree.

Acer
Acer or Japanese maple is a symbol of strength and endurance, it is often used in the art of Bonsai and it is traditional to go to view the changing colours of the leaves in Autumn, much like the cherry blossom is viewed in the spring.
Cow
The cow is a familiar symbol in Japanese temples, it is regarded as a messenger of the gods. They are a symbol of good harvest and protectors from illness.
Tsuba
A tsuba is the hand guard for a Japanese sword, they balance the sword, protect the hand from an enemy blade and show status. Tsuba have become collectible works of art in their own right.
