A Japanese meiji period carved wood and lacquer okimono of the famous flute player Fujiwara no Yasumasa, based on the wood block print by Yoshitoshi.
From our collection of Japanese, Meiji-era (1868-1912) wood carvings, this characterful Okimono group depicting the famous flute player Fujiwara no Yasumasa and the bandit, Hakamadare Yasusuke.
The scene is based on the wood-block print by Yoshitoshi.

As in the legend, the depiction of Fujiwara no Yasumasa is wearing elegant robes whilst the ferocious bandit, Hakamadare Yasusuke is preparing to wield his Katana.
Offered in fine condition as shown in the photographs. This Okimono group is 44cm in height at the tallest point and 39cm across. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information or to arrange a viewing.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a wood block print artist active during the late Edo and Meiji periods.
He is regarded as the last Great Master of the Ukiyo-e style of woodblock printing. “Fujiwara no Yasumasa” plays the flute by moonlight is considered to be one of his great masterpieces and one of the last great works of this era. It is often reproduced and was inspiration for many contemporary artists in different media
