A fantastic Japanese Bronze Okimono of a fat rat. She has gilt teeth and Shakudo eyes and there is patination to the ears and the nut.
The fact that this particular rat is very well fed and holding a Chestnut (a popular New Years cuisine) indicates that it may be a prosperous year.
The rat is signed to the underside Hogetsusai.

In Japan rats do not have the negative connotations they sometimes do in the Western world. The rat was the first animal to arrive at the New Years greeting and so is the first of the Zodiac animals, it represents prosperity of descendants and social success.
