From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era works of art, this impressive Bronze Koro by the Nogawa Company and standing on tripod legs. The Koro with a dramatic graduating collar to the neck, stylised Baku ears and a Kirin as a sculptural Knop to the lid. The body of the Koro is decorated with a sinuous wrap-around design of flowering Wisteria, and bats against a full Moon.
Wisteria
Wisteria symbolises love. The long life of the plant also represents immortality and longevity so it is a popular motif in Kimono designs and Japanese Art. Much like the cherry blossom, it is popular to have viewing parties when the vines are in flower.
Baku
The Baku is an unusual looking Japanese mythological creature, said to have been made from the parts left over from when the gods made the animals. They have short compact bodies and a trunk resembling an elephant or tapir. The Baku is said to use it’s unique snout to eat nightmares, in Japan children often keep Baku talismans next to their beds to ward off bad dreams.
Bat
In Asian culture the bat represents luck simply because the Chinese word for bat sounds like the Chinese word for luck.
Kirin (Qilin Chinese)
The Kirin is a familiar creature in East Asian mythology. It is sometimes known as the Asian Unicorn, and is often depicted with a single horn on it’s head. Other distinguishing features are cloven hooves and scales. The Japanese Kirin often resembles a deer while the Chinese version is more dragon like. The Kirin is a peaceful creature, so peaceful in fact that in Buddhist stories it will not tread upon the grass for fear of harming it. Instead it walks upon water or clouds. It is said the that Kirin only appears in kingdoms ruled by a wise and benevolent leader.
Nogawa
The Nogawa factory and workshops were active in the Meiji Period (1868-1912) through to the early 20th century. They created many works to appeal to Western tastes and used many different metal-ware techniques.
