A beautiful and serene depiction of the celebrated Chinese General Guan Yu. Carved from a single piece of Boxwood, this netsuke.
The netsuke shows Guan Yu holding his famous full-length Naginata and in the other hand he clasps the knot of this sash. He also sports his trademark “peerless” beard.
Condition is very good. Please contact us for further information.
Guan Yu (Chinese)
Guan Yu (160AD-220AD) was a real Chinese general who served during the late Han Dynasty under the warlord Liu Bei. He was famously loyal to Liu Bei and they shared many exploits together, these became part of the 14th century historic novel ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’. Due to his loyalty and righteousness Guan Yu is worshipped by many people across Asia, he is an important deity in Chinese Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, as such you will often see small shrines to him in Chinese dwellings.
Guan Yu is a popular Character in Japan, stories of his exploits and depictions of him are common in Japanese art. He is usually seen with his famous Green Dragon Guandao (double edged pole blade) and sometimes on the legendary horse ‘Red Hare’.
Netsuke
A netsuke is essentially a toggle, used to prevent an object (usually an inro) from slipping through the obi (kimono belt). A cord is passed through the himotoshi (two small holes on the netsuke or a natural hole formed by a leg or arm of the piece) the other end tied to a container containing money, herbs or tobacco. The cord is then passed through the obi with the netsuke resting above it and the container below.
Netsuke have evolved from being utilitarian objects to miniature sculptures of great beauty and craftsmanship. Subjects they depict wide ranging and are an important record of Japanese life and folklore.
