This fantastic Tanto and Scabbard dates from the reign of Emperor Meiji, 1868-1912 it is decorated with cherry blossom and a pair of Hawks in gold, Silver and Shakudo
The blade is serrated and cord attached to scabbard.

Cherry Blossom
Cherry blossom is a well known symbol of Japan, it is beautiful but fleeting, it represents spring, a time of renewal and reminds us of the fleeting nature of life.
Hawk
The hawk is traditionally a symbol of nobility and wealth, due to the expense of training and caring for the birds.
Tanto
Although a sword the Tanto is used more like a knife, the blade can be single or double edged and is between 15-30cm long which is equal to one Japanese shaku. (A Japanese foot) The Tanto is often worn with a Katana or tachi. The Tanto is traditionally the blade that would have been used for Seppuku, the ritual suicide performed by Samurai.
Saya
Saya is the Japanese term for a scabbard.
Shakudo is an alloy of gold and copper which can be treated to develop a black patina.
