From our collection of Japanese, late 19th Century Ceramics, this finely painted five-sided Satsuma pot and cover.
Initially, it appears to be an innocent vessel in the shape of prunus blossom and decorated with a swirling patten of flowers but on closer inspection, the inside of the lid reveals its true and risqué nature.
An image of a couple “enjoying each other’s company” on a Snowy riverbank is rendered in astonishing and minute detail… leaving nothing to the imagination.
The exterior of the vessel with a mille-fleur decoration to the lower half of the body and joyful scenes of young boys playing above. The cover has six beautifully painted panels each with intricate Kimono patterns.
Signed to the underside and offered in fine condition as shown in the photographs. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information, images or… if you are feeling brave enough… a viewing in person.

Shunga
Though often used in modern terms to refer to any sexually explicit Japanese artwork, Shunga translates as “Spring pictures,”. The term refers to Japanese erotic art produced primarily during the Edo period (1603–1868).
Created principally as woodblock prints or paintings, Shunga depicted explicit sexual scenes with humor, tenderness, and aesthetic refinement. Far from being taboo, Shunga was popular across social classes. It was used for education, marital guidance, or simply “personal enjoyment”. Despite censorship in some periods, Shunga retained its popularity which continues to this day.
Cherry Blossom
Cherry blossom is a well known symbol of Japan. It is beautiful but fleeting and is a representation of Spring – a time of renewal. It serves as a reminder of the fleeting beauty and fragility of life.
