Geza Vastagh Lion and Lioness
It is not uncommon to see Japanese silk copies of European paintings or prints, during the Meiji period Japan opened up to the world and as they traded more they realized that producing images to appeal to Western tastes could be profitable. They would purchase prints of popular western paintings and copy them in silk sometimes adding their own details, one of the most frequently seen is a male lion and sleeping lioness by Geza Vastagh (1866-1919) a Hungarian artist. The original so many embroideries are based on is currently held in the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth. The image was orignally purches by Pears soap to be used as one of their three annual prints for sale, it was originally titled ‘Repose’ but was renamed ‘The British Lion’ to appeal to customers.
