A wonderful example of Japanese Meiji-era Zogan work, this lobed dish is signed by Ando Katsuaki and produced in the style of the renowned metal worker Komai.
In the main body of the dish with a large central panel decorated with an elaborate Edo period courtiers carriage (Gosho Guruma) with imperial mon, potentially suggesting a member of the imperial family travels within, it appears empty and free of attendants, no doubt they are exploring the beautiful landscape seen beyond. Around the central image various smaller panels show depictions of scenic views around Kyoto and Lake Biwa, these are surrounded by borders of geometrical patterns, clouds and leafy grape vines.
Offered in good condition as displayed in these photographs. Please feel free to contact us to arrange a viewing.
Gosho Guruma
Gosho Guruma are Japanese carriages dating back to medieval Japan, they were drawn by oxen and used as transport for the imperial family and nobility. They were often used to transport people around Kyoto to view the cherry blossoms.
Lake Biwa
Lake biwa is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, it’s located to the north east of the former capital Kyoto. It is named lake Biwa due to it’s resemblance to the instrument of the same name, which is a favourite of the goddess Benten who us said to live on an island in the lake.
Komai
Komai was a workshop in Japan known for their fine damascene work. Before the Meiji period they specialized in decorative sword fittings, after the carrying of swords was outlawed they turned their hand to creating artworks and goods to appeal to the export market.
