From our collection of antique Japanese ceramics, this impressive and finely painted Satsuma vase bearing the marks of Ryozan and the Yasuda Company.
The tapered, four-sided vase stands tall at 41cm in height and each side is 20cm across at the widest point. Each side is beautifully decorated with a different scene.
Signed to the underside and offered in very good condition as shown in the photographs. Please feel free to contact us to arrange a viewing or for further information or images.

Bijin
Bijin is a Japanese term which refers to a beautiful person.
Carp
Due to them being the only fish to conquer the waterfalls of the yellow river, Carp represent courage and strength in Japanese culture. The gift of a Koi carp is believed to grant the receiver great strength.
Wisteria
Wisteria symbolizes love and the long life of the plant also represents immortality and longevity. As such, it is a popular motif in Kimono designs and Japanese Art. Much like the Cherry Blossom it is popular to have viewing parties when the vines are in flower.
Ryozan
Ryozan was the head artist at the Yasuda company, he was active during the Meiji period and is regarded as one of the greatest satsuma artists, his work ranges in size and shape but always has a fine painterly quality to the decoration, faces are rendered with particular skill.
Yasuda Company
Yasuda were a Kyoto based satsuma company active during the Meiji Period (1868-1912) they had many famous artists working for them including Ryozan and Hozan.
