From our collection of Meiji-era Okimono, a fine Japanese wood-carving of a monkey and youngsters with a very large snake.
A very fine and considered composition featuring two of the most favourite subjects of Japanese art, the Monkey and the Snake. Despite the situation they find themselves in, the monkeys don’t seem to be overly concerned about the enormous snake wrapped around them suggesting this is a common occurrence or that the snake is perhaps friendly.
Unsigned and offered in excellent condition. Don’t hesitate to contact us for further information.
Monkey
The monkey is a favourite subject in Japanese art due to it’s mischievous nature, they feature in many folktales and often find themselves in humorous situations. They are one of the twelve animals of the zodiac, people born in the year of the Monkey are said to be witty and intelligent.
Snake
The snake is one of the animals of the zodiac, it represents wisdom, change and good luck as well as protecting from illness.
