A Japanese Satsuma bowl with decoration of Tennin flying above two Arhats. One is holding a scroll and that could possibly be Arhat Kalika. A monkey sits behind him and appears to be staring intently at the other elderly man. Monkeys are often seen in Buddhism to be both wise and foolish so perhaps this alludes to the other man’s character.
The outside of the bowl is decorated with a group of wise elderly men possible, (more Arhats) who appear to be in deep discussion. They are attended by children who are holding various auspicious objects such as Koro and Ruyi.
Condition is very good, as per the images. Feel free to contact us for further information or to request a viewing.

Tennin means heavenly person, they often referred to as Buddhist Angels. Tennin are almost always female and are shown floating in the air with the use of the celestial scarf (Kesa). They often carry a lotus flower and play musical instruments. They are derived from the Indian Apsara – celestial nymphs who were attendants of the sun and moon.

Monkey
In Japan the monkey is a protector of horses and mediator between humans and the gods. Monkeys have the power to dispel evil spirits and bring good fortune. Due to their playful nature they are also depicted as creatures of humour. In Buddhism the monkey can be seen as both wise and foolish.
Ruyi

Satsuma
Satsuma ware is a type of earthenware pottery originating from the Satsuma province in Southern Kyūshū, Japan’s third largest island. The first kilns were established here is the 16th century by Korean potters kidnapped by the Japanese for their extraordinary skills, prior to this there was no ceramic industry in Satsuma.
The first presentation of Japanese arts to the West was in 1867, Satsuma was one of the star attractions, it was this that established the satsuma aesthetic we are most familiar with today. This export style reflects the foreign tastes of the time, popular designs featured millefleur (million flower), and complex filled in patterns. Many pieces featured panels depicting typical Japanese scenes to appeal to the west such as pagodas, cherry blossom, birds and flowers and beautiful ladies and noble men in traditional dress. The height of popularity for Satsuma was the Meiji Period and many of the most beautiful and artistically accomplished works were made during this time.
