From our collection of antique Japanese metalware from the time of Emperor Meiji, (186801912) this fascinating Bronze vase vast using the Mitsuro Hikime (lost wax) technique to cleverly depict flowering Irises.
The artist has also used the technique to simulate a stream running along at the bottom of the vase. Some types of Irises (Water or Marginal Irises) are known to grow in or around water.
Mitsuri Hikime is a Japanese wax-sculpting method that is used to form delicate patterns and organic-like textures in sculpture and jewellery.

In Japan the Iris (Ayme) represents courage and good news. Its sword-shaped leaves symbolise a warrior’s spirit, making it a popular gift for individuals facing challenges or starting new ventures.
Mitsuro Hikime
Mitsuro Hikime is an ancient Japanese art form used to create jewellery and sculpture. The proves involves warming and then repeatedly pulling, folding and stretching organic wax to create intricate textures and patterns. It is then shaped by hand to form unique striations before being cast into metal.
