A fascinating Japanese Meiji-era bronze and gilt Okimono depicting an attendant of Ryujin holding a gift aloft whilst standing on the neck of a Dragon fish, (Shachihoko).
The figure, wearing robes and with a fish head-piece is likely an attendant to Ryujin the Dragon God of the Sea. He appears to be holding a wrapped gift, possibly a small Koto musical instrument.
The Dragon fish with elaborate Gold decoration.
Bears the mark of Miyao with the inscription “Made by Miyao” on the under belly of the Dragon fish.
Condition is very good.
On a wood and gold lacquer stand, typical of the Miyao Eisuke studio.
Shachihoko
The Shachihoko (or Sachi) is a type of mythological fish in Japanese folklore, it is said to have the head of the tiger and the body of the carp. It often has dragon- like features, such as horns or whiskers. It was believed that the fish could summon rain, so they often adorned flammable wooden castes and temples.
Ryujin
Ryujin is the dragon god of the sea, he is considered a good god and a patron of Japan, he is able to take human form and controls the sea with two tide jewels, one lowering and the other raising the tides. He lives under the sea in a large and impressive castle made from white and red coral, along with his two daughters and many attendants. Attendants of Ryujin can appear as sea creatures or in human form, usually wearing a hat with a fish on. He appears in many stories and legends including Benkei and the Bell and Empress Jingu.
Koto
A koto is Japanese plucked half-tube zither instrument, it is the national instrument of Japan.
