A finely painted pair of 19th century Chinese blue and white vases with decorative ears. The vases are decorated with mirrored wrap around scenes of Han Dynasty warriors seeing off an intruder, the general depicted on the piebald horse with the impressive duel feathered headdress is likely to be Guan Yu, the top panel is also mirrored and shows a government official and attendants observing the fight from the safety of camp.
Guan Yu (160-220AD)
Guan Yu was a Chinese military general who served under the warlord Lui Bei, he was instrumental in assisting Lui Bei in establishing the state of Shu Han during the warring three Kingdoms period. After his death his exploits and achievements were glorified in the 14th century novel ‘The Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ to such a point that he was, and still is worshiped as a god. In modern day China there are many shrines dedicated to him and you will even find depictions of him in Japanese art. He is always depicted with a lustrous beard and is often carrying his guandao known as the green dragon crescent blade, he will sometimes be depicting riding a red horse; the famous Red Hare of legend.

The Han Dynasty was the second imperial dynasty of China, it was a time of economic growth, great scientific advancement and war.
