From our collection of antique Japanese metalwork, this charming Meiji-era (1868-1912) Bronze sculpture of “Red Hare” – the legendary horse belonging to Chinese General Guan Yu.
The horse stands alert, as if looking for his master or perhaps waiting for him to return.
Red Hare wears his famous saddle, this version with crashing waves, most likely signifying his ability to gallop so fast he was able to cross ferocious rivers.
The Okimono is based on the Ferghana Horse, the breed of hose it is believed that Red Hare was himself. They were believed to be the best horses in the world and are distinctive due to their short legs and powerful, muscular necks.
