Eagle
In Japan the eagle has represented the great power of nature since ancient times.
Phoenix
The phoenix is a powerful symbol in Japan, used to represent the Empress. When used to decorate an object or house it symbolises the loyalty and honesty of the people that live there, traditionally a phoenix only stays when a ruler is without corruption.
Kingfisher
The kingfisher is a common bird in Japan, it is the symbol of many towns and cities in wetland areas.
Wisteria
Wisteria symbolizes love, the long life of the plant also represents immortality and longevity, so it is a popular motif in Kimono designs and Japanese Art. Much like the cherry blossom it is popular to have viewing parties when the vines are in flower.
Shibayama
Shibayama is a style of inlay decoration used to create a design on wood, ivory or lacquer. Small peices of shell, horn, coral, wood, ivory, bone and other colourful precious materials would be semi-inland into the base material to give a 3D effect.
The style of decoration is named after the artist Shibayama who created and popularized the artform.
