Welcome to our Autumn Newsletter

Dear Reader,

Here in the UK, the clocks have gone back an hour, the pavements and parks around our little corner of North London are littered with fallen leaves of all colours and carved pumpkins and spider-webs adorn windows and doorsteps everywhere you look. Welcome to our Autumn Newsletter.

In this edition, we showcase four majestic Japanese Meiji-era works of art, we look at the important role that fishing has played in Japanese life over the years, introduce the reader to some fearsome mythical beasts and recant two of our favourite magical Japanese folktales.

There is also a look at some of the beautiful Oriental works of art that we have introduced to our website over the last few months and a preview of some of the exciting pieces that we will be adding to these pages between now and the end of the year.

We hope you enjoy the read.

A striking pair of vases signed Chomin

Our featured work of art for August was this beautiful pair of late 19th Century Bronze and multi-metal vases. We explored the wealth of hidden-meaning found in this wonderful example of Meiji-era craftsmanship. Read the blog here.

The Tale of Urashima Taro

One of our favourite Japanese folk-tales tells the story of an encounter between a humble fisherman and … a tortoise. A charming tale of kindness, heroism, love and loss, click on the image below to discover it for yourself.

A beautiful pair of Geese by the Maruki Company

In September, we chose this serene Bronze pair of Geese as our featured work. In the accompanying article, we take a look at the symbolism that Geese carry in Japan and shine the light on the Maruki Company, one of the most prominent metalwork studios during the reign of Emperor Meiji, (1868-1912)

The Grateful Crane

Another of our favourite Japanese legends, (there are so many to choose from) is the magical fairytale of The Grateful Crane. A bittersweet story of love and loss and illustrated here by some of the works in our collection of Japanese fine art and antiques, we are sure you will love it just as much as we do.

Oni Fans! Things that go bump in the night

As it’s Halloween this week, we have written a special blog all about another one of favourite characters of Japanese legend, the fearsome “Oni”.

What we value: Our appraisal service

This year we have helped raise hundreds of Pounds for The British Red Cross through our “What we value” initiative. We regularly receive request to provide valuations and background information on Chinese and Japanese works of art and instead of charging for this service, we simply ask that a small donation is made to our chosen charity. The British Red Cross, as part of the Global Disasters Emergency Committee, carry out incredible and vital work, providing food and water, first aid, shelter, warm clothing, hygiene parcels and much more.
